The cost of your lead generation activity draws correlation to the quality you expect from a lead. If you focus on generating new contacts, the costs are slightly different from if you were to focus qualified leads that have gone through all marketing funnels. You may already have a number of contacts, for example from building an email database over time. Believe it or not, lead generation is something that is often outsourced to a lead generation companies.

Wind the clock back to the year 2000 and we had the boom of telesales and telemarketing businesses, all looking to close deals over the phone.

However, over the last 20 years we have developed more and more insights into buying cycles, and how we should approach both B2B and B2C lead generation.

The lead generation can be divided into different stages. These stages are referred to as a funnel. It is typical for the audience volume to get smaller and smaller, the deeper your leads go into your nurturing. This is due to your quality getting higher the further down they’re nurtured. During this process, leads may be being disqualified (or save for later) due to not fitting your customer profile, or not being ready to purchase.

The funnels are split into the following classifications:

Top of Funnel (TOFU): Create awareness of a problem for which you have a solution
Middle of Funnel (MOFU): Provide possible solutions for a problem
Bottom of Funnel (BOFU): Position your brand or company as leader to solve the problem with your solution

A qualified lead usually goes through all three stages and should be Sales ready after that. This means that your Sales team can pick up the conversation with them about pricing and close the dial quickly as your lead should already be convinced of your solution and position in the market.
